Noah Baumbach’s ‘Marriage Story’ Tapped For New York Film Festival Centerpiece Selection

Noah Baumbach’s ‘Marriage Story’ Tapped For New York Film Festival Centerpiece Selection
Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” will be the Centerpiece selection at the 57th New York Film Festival. The news comes just a day after the festival announced that Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman,” will be its opening night film. Both pictures are being released by Netflix, giving the streaming service two of the most prominent slots for movies it hopes will go the distance this awards season.

Marriage Story,” a look at a couple going through a divorce, stars Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. Despite their determination to keep their break-up amicable, Charlie (Driver) and Nicole (Johansson) quickly find themselves in an often pitched legal and custody battle. The cast also includes Alan Alda, Ray Liotta, Laura Dern, Merritt Wever, Julie Hagerty, and Azhy Robertson.

The movie is said to be something of a companion piece with Baumbach’s “The Squid and the Whale,” his critically acclaimed 2005 drama about a

Hollywood Vampires: The Birth of Midnight Movies on L.A.'s Sunset Strip, Part 1

Hollywood Vampires: The Birth of Midnight Movies on L.A.'s Sunset Strip is a three-part series of essays by Tim Concannon.Targets: The Lost Midnight MOVIEIn revisiting Peter Bogdanovich’s Targets we’re invited to unearth an archaeology of cult cinema. Targets links the old Hollywood of Schwab's, Chateau Marmont and the Garden of Allah hotel to what, in 1968, was to be the new Hollywood of easy riders and raging bulls. "All the good movies have been made"—Peter Bogdanovich as Sammy Michaels, Targets1968's Targets, is the story of an aging film star played by expat Anglo Indian thespian, Boris Karloff. Karloff's Byron Orlok (named after Count Orlok in Murnau's 1922 Nosferatu) is clearly Karloff playing a grumpier version of himself. As two parallel stories converge in the film's Third Act, the Old Hollywood horror icon Orlok is confronted by a serial killer—gun nut and sniper Bobby Thompson,

Hollywood Vampires: The Birth of Midnight Movies on L.A.'s Sunset Strip is a three-part series of essays by Tim Concannon.Once Upon A Time On The Sunset STRIP1969 on the Sunset Strip was a period of dislocation, dissipation and dissolution from which the Hollywood of the Seventies emerged. A movie theatre adjoining Santa Monica Boulevard, where the Underground Cinema 12 film festival held sold-out midnight shows attended by thousands of Freaks, is an overlooked catalyst of L.A.'s underground scene, alongside Pandora's Box, the club recreated in Riot On the Sunset Strip (1967) and which was the focus of the November 1966 Sunset Strip disturbances.Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon A Time...in Hollywood—which is woven around the Manson family murders in 1969, though it isn't focused on them—is situated in the same unsettling hinterland between film stardom and savage violence that Peter Bogdanovich's Targets touches on as well.

How The CW’s ‘Riverdale’ Provides a Direction Through the Cluttered Streaming Landscape

Streaming has become something of a buyer’s market recently, and network executives are hustling to make their platforms stand out in an unprecedented and crowded film and television environment.

At the Natpe Streaming Plus event in Los Angeles Tuesday, panelists, including executives from Netflix, CBS All Access, Starz, and a host of other television networks and streaming platforms, discussed the problems of monetization and content delivery that film and television providers are grappling with in the era of streaming video.

No matter the subject, the perpetually increasing competitiveness of the streaming market loomed over every panel. There are already over 300 streaming services in the United States, and many of them feature acclaimed and popular films and television shows. Content wasn’t the primary discussion topic at Natpe, and rightfully so: Having the rights to one or two hit programs is no longer enough to stand out in the saturated streaming market,

Pmk-bnc and Rogers & Cowan, Now Hollywood’s Biggest PR Firm — But Is That Better?

When major PR firms merge, they’re usually consolidating in order to stay on top. It’s a little different for former standalones Pmk-Bnc (which has merged at least four times in 40 years) and Rogers & Cowan: Both are owned by the publicly traded Interpublic Group (2018 revenue: $9.71 billion). Now, they will form a single firm (yet to be named) that will represent more than 500 clients and 30 brands.

So why the change? The combo creates a more impressive client list, and will allow them to trim the expenses and other redundancies that come when two entities merge. It’s the easiest and fastest way to become bigger while meeting the demands of their corporate overlords.

Of course, bigger is not always better. Still, when the new company officially launches January 1, it will dwarf Kelly Bush and Mara Buxbaum’s ID-pr. It will also become one of the top 20 PR firms in the world,

PETA Pressures DiCaprio and Scorsese to Help Save ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ Chimpanzee

PETA Pressures DiCaprio and Scorsese to Help Save ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ Chimpanzee
Nearly two years after first contacting Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio, PETA has reached out again this week to the film collaborators calling on them to help free the chimpanzee that was featured in “The Wolf of Wall Street.” PETA obtained new video of the chimpanzee being tied up and forced to perform in a circus show. A PETA representative told IndieWire the organization sent letters to Scorsese and DiCaprio asking if they will help in the animal’s release.

“Dear Mr. Scorsese and Mr. DiCaprio,” the letter reads. “Our team recently obtained this footage of Chance, the chimpanzee used in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street.’ As you’ll see, he’s still being used in a circus sideshow, tethered and forced to perform in front of frightening crowds. There’s still time to help him. Will you? Please let us know.”

‘The Boys’ Creator Details the One Racy Scene Amazon Removed

Amazon’s new series “The Boys” takes a hard R-rated look at comic book superheroes, but not every Nsfw moment was able to fly under the streaming giant’s radar. During a recent Reddit Ama (via The Wrap), “The Boys” co-creator Erik Kripke said that Amazon cut one scene from the show that depicted one of the characters, Anthony Starr’s Homelander, pulling down his pants and masturbating over New York City.

“There was one scene that Amazon said, ‘Fuck no you have to cut,'” Kripke said. “I couldn’t quite understand why considering everything else we have in the show, but Homelander, after being dressed down by Stilwell (Elisabeth Shue) in episode 2, was standing on one of the Chrysler building Eagles. He pulled his pants down and started jerking off, mumbling ‘I can do whatever I want’ over and over again until he climaxed all over New York City.

Kristen Stewart on How Joan Jett Made Her Cry and Sean Penn Made Her Want to Direct

Kristen Stewart on How Joan Jett Made Her Cry and Sean Penn Made Her Want to Direct
Anyone who was watched Kristen Stewart’s film work evolve over the years knows she is in possession of an extremely controlled talent capable of communicating great emotional depths. Though her offscreen persona can be a bit opaque — her reserved nature comes from years as a teen idol from the “Twilight” years — any actor as good as Stewart is obviously a deeply sensitive soul. That much is clear from an anecdote she shared recently about playing Joan Jett during the 2010 rock biopic about the legendary musician. During a video interview with Vanity Fair, Stewart recalled the first time she played The Runaways’ hit song Cherry Bomb in front of Jett.

“At our first band rehearsal, we were playing Cherry Bomb and I just wasn’t committing to it at all because we weren’t shooting. Why would I fully, fully, fully lean into this when we’re not actually here to capture it?

According to Deadline, the series will follow Ruth, “a former drug addict and runaway, who returns home and rediscovers the special powers she thought she lost, powers that her family have long kept hidden from the public.”

Hart & Horowitz will write the pilot, with Hart directing.

‘Alita’ Star Rosa Salazar Wants A Sequel & Encourages Fans To Buy Blu-Rays To Force Disney Into Making It

After a couple of delays and a ton of hype, the James Cameron-produced and Robert Rodriguez-directed action film “Alita: Battle Angel” arrived in theaters earlier this year. The reception to the film was mixed with only a 61% on Rotten Tomatoes, but fans that enjoyed the film really enjoyed it. There was even a campaign to encourage folks to see ‘Alita’ instead of “Captain Marvel” (both were playing at the same time).

Tarantino Kept Full ‘Hollywood’ Script Locked in a Safe to Prevent Spoiler Leaks
One of the most famous episodes of Quentin Tarantino’s career is the infamous leak of “The Hateful Eight” script in January 2014. Tarantino had only given the first draft of the script to a handful of collaborators when it leaked, prompting him to announce he would abandon the project as a directorial effort. The filmmaker told Deadline at the time the leak made him “very, very depressed.” Tarantino eventually changed his mind and directed “The Hateful Eight” anyway, but he has learned his lesson not to trust anyone when it comes to preserving his latest story.

In a new interview with Business Insider, Tarantino’s longtime cinematographer, Robert Richardson, said he didn’t get to finish the full script for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” until well into the movie’s production. Tarantino’s ending takes a revisionist approach to history, and the director was so paranoid spoilers would

Joss Whedon’s newest series has its cast. On Tuesday, HBO announced the ensemble for the upcoming “The Nevers”, a sci-fi Victorian-era drama that sees a group of women dealing with some inexplicable abilities.

Among the new additions to the cast is Olivia Williams, who’ll be reuniting with Whedon after previously appearing in his most recent network series “Dollhouse”. Williams recently concluded her work on the canceled-too-early Starz espionage drama “Counterpart”, which featured her as a series regular. In “The Nevers” she’ll play Lavinia Bidlow, the proprietor of an orphanage where those with special powers — known as the “Touched” — gather.

James Norton also joins the cast as the operator behind a club and blackmailing ring who looks into various incidents related to the Touched. Norton will soon appear in another imminent period piece, Greta Gerwig’s adaptation of “Little Women”. Laura Donnelly was previously announced as the lead of the series,

Critics Pick Their Favorite Musical Guest Stars on Scripted TV

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.

This week’s question: Who is your favorite musical guest star on a scripted show? Past and present shows apply.

      Ben Travers (@BenTTravers), IndieWire

Aside from the curious acting career of one Sturgill Simpson, I’m not all that interested in musicians testing out their acting skills. The elements of performance that tie the two pursuits together can make a singer an enticing screen presence, but it’s usually their appearance on the show that spikes my interest before any of their music — if they’re a good actor, great, but if they’re just there for a ratings hit or to hook music fans, I’m good. That being said, I must say I made sure to watch Bruce Springsteen’s guest stint in the final episode “Lilyhammer.” Appearing as an eccentric mortician,
